Review: THREE WEEKS Sleeping Rough: A Duo of Duologues
Jacaranda Theatre
How could the description of two duologues depicting dialogues between
the homeless not instantly recall 'Godot'? The latter duologue
absolutely supports this connection, being a nihilistic piece of
verbally raw exchanges and peculiar tales between the chaotic
itinerants. Yet the first is a contrasting surprise: literal,
aggressive and acutely observed, it is a witness to realism, smartly
countering the more abstracted dialogue of the latter piece. Clenched
and weary movements characterize each tableau, an endless fidgeting
until the next hit and a resistance to meeting eyes. As testament to
their abrasive and solitary quality, these portrayals are grating to
watch, confronting a horrible situation in a starkly staged and barely
lit space. For the very same reason as it's being laudable, it is an
extremely harrowing viewing experience.

RAIMONDO CORTESE’S
BREAK IN (From his
ROULETTE series) UK
DEBUT
Two
young heroin addicts, Julie and Cam,
anchored to a street bench, act out a drama that captures
their hopeless predicament at the bottom of the social pile
and the intermittent but crucial optimism that helps them
imagine the possibility of progress.
Raimondo Cortese:
is a
founding member of Ranters Theatre, for which these
these raw and immediate Roulette duologues were
originally written. They have toured Adelaide,
Melbourne, Sydney and Portugal, exploring human behaviour in a
range of situations. Raimondo’s work has a dark
edge, yet the works are also full of humour especially in the
subtle twists in the narrative and in the away the power moves
from one character to another on the turn of a word.
Director: Megan Finlay, Cast: Debra Low and Mackenzie
Scott.

relevant, theatrically engaging and very much of the day”

DANIEL
KEENE’S NIGHT, A WALL, TWO
MEN
Straight from its
sold-out run in the "Stoked" Theatre Festival, this vicious,
funny play is exactly what it says on the box: two nameless
“down-and-outs” against a wall with their nightly musings,
arguments, abuse and lamentations to keep them company. This
is theatre of poverty, of the voiceless and invisible, which
emerges from the shadows and bites you on the arse.
Director: Debra
Low (Artistic
Director, Jacaranda Theatre) Cast: Donal Cox and John
Eastman
Daniel Keene
is a “dangerous playwright” who “works right on
the moral edge” (Sydney Morning Herald), He exposes society’s
underbelly and finds a vicious beauty. His multi-award
winning plays have been acclaimed throughout Australia, in the
United States, France and Poland, and since the late 1990s he
has established himself as one of Europe’s most notable
contemporary playwrights.
